Your Trusted Furnace Repair & Installation Company

Your furnace has a big job: providing heat in the wintertime, keeping you, your pipes, and your family from freezing. But furnaces aren’t perfect, and over time they can break down, stop working, or lose efficiency, which can cost you a pretty penny in energy expenditures. At Van Drunen Heating & Air Conditioning, we want to make sure that your family is kept comfortable during the coldest of months, and provide all of the furnace services you could need as such.

Understanding Different Furnace Types

Not all furnaces are the same, and in the last decade, furnace technology has improved in order to provide more energy efficiency, which is great for both homeowners and the earth. Today, furnaces come in a variety of different types, and each type is accompanied by an efficiency rating. The Department of Energy explains the most common types on their website, described here:

  • Gas-fired furnaces. Gas furnaces are fueled by either natural gas or propane, although the latter is usually more expensive.
  • Oil-fired furnaces. Oil-fired furnaces are much more dated, although they are still found in some homes throughout Illinois. Unfortunately, many of these systems are old and inefficient, leading to significant energy losses.

The Department of Energy further explains that while older systems may only have an efficiency rating of around 56 to 70 percent, modern systems have the potential to be more than 98 percent energy efficient! Upgrading your system can save you hundreds of dollars in energy and repair costs over the years.

Gas Furnaces

Gas Furnaces

Gas furnaces are the most popular heating option, known for providing consistent heat for Chicagoland homes and businesses. Gas furnaces create warm air which then circulates through the ductwork of a building, transferring heat into each room along the way.

The heat used to warm the air is created by burning natural gas, giving a gas furnace its name. A device called a heat exchanger is used to transfer the heat created by the combustion process to the air in the ducts. The heat exchanger generally consists of several curved metal tubes that are filled with the heated combustion gases, and the indoor air passes over these tubes. Thermal energy is transferred from the metal tubes to the air passing over them, warming the air without allowing it to contact the potentially harmful gases. The remaining combustion gases are transferred out of the system through a flue, a type of pipe that vents outside the building into the surrounding air.
